Losing Weight Without "Dieting"

Do We Really Need to Diet?

With obesity being such a major problem these days, dieting has become a common word. There are so many diets out there and I'm sure there can be pros and cons argued for most of them. But, being in the business of herbal nutrition, I like the thought of losing weight in a more natural way. By that, I mean that we don't have to actually use a "diet" where we only eat certain things, or we cut out carbs or whatever it may be. I think that if we just ate in a more healthy way, cut out the unhealthy fats, eat healthy meals and snacks, do regular exercise and don't starve ourselves, then I think that many of us would find the weight come of with ease.

So.....What Do We Do?

To start with, I think education is vitally important. Learn about fibre, healthy fats and carbohydrates, protein and other important dietary fundamentals so that we can understand what it is we are putting into our bodies, what these things do for us and how our body uses them. Once we do that, then we are ready to plan our meals, our snacks, and what we drink. Then we can feed our bodies properly so that they can use the food as fuel and function at their peak ability and potential. I think you will be amazed at how good you feel, how your attitude will improve, your mental awareness will increase, and your metabolism and energy will increase.

Get That Momentum Going

There is truly a momentum once you start. Once you increase your metabolism, your body burns calories faster. If you increase your protein to about 100 gr per day which is about where it should be (men and women vary a bit), it will help you build lean muscle mass which burns calories so much faster than fat. Protein is also good for helping you feel full longer and it can help you decrease your craving for carbs. If you feel full, then you are not going to crave those chips and chocolate bars that have empty calories. That's why I like to use protein snacks. They are very satisfying and get me through to my next meal.

Speaking of meals, it is true that more small meals are better for you than skipping breakfast (truly the most important meal of the day) and lunch and then eating a huge meal at supper time. Eating smaller healthy portions more often keeps you feeling full and helps keep your metabolism at a good level.

What Do I Do?

I absolutely love meal replacement shakes. They really are a meal in themselves. If you get a good one, you will have all the vitamins and minerals you need for the day, a good amount of protein and not too many calories. The one I use has about 240 calories when I mix it with skim milk. If I am trying to lose weight, I have two meal replacement shakes, a healthy third meal and I use protein snacks for in between meals to keep my energy up and my appetite satisfied.

I consider myself fairly active. I do a lot of walking, and my job is a physical one. I don't sit down much during the day, unless I am working at the computer. When I am watching T.V. in the evening, I get up during commercials to do something (maybe laundry, dishes, whatever I have to do). That helps keep me from dozing off which I like to do in the evening, or from wanting that empty calorie snack. That is definitely one of my weaknesses.

In Conclusion

I hope that more people take the time to learn about their bodies and how they work. Try improving your health using quality nutrition. Even make it herbal nutrition. I think you will like it.

The only problem I see with meal replacement shakes is that you lose weight initially fast but then once you stop the shakes you gain the weight back. Eating three sensible meals and two healthy snacks is really the key. Diets fail and people know that.

Hi Noni,

I do agree that if you are dieting, then once you stop, it very often happens that you gain the weight back.

I use two meal replacement shakes to lose weight. Once I'm where I want to be, I still have one shake a day because they are a healthy meal, and have two healthy meals along with it.

If you eat healthy and exercise regularly in some way after the weight is off, then it shouldn't come back on.

Hi Everyone,

I have been sitting pondering Noni's comment, and I think maybe I need to clarify.

I don't believe that meal replacement shakes are a "diet". They are, as their name implies, a meal replacement and a healthy one, with the vitamins and minerals you need, fibre, protein (about 18gr) and fewer calories. To me they are a win, win option.

The whole point of my post was supposed to be that you don't need to use a diet to lose weight. Healthy eating and regular exercise is the way to go.I hope I was able to get that across.

Thanks,

Sue
